β° SUITABILITY
Strengths: β’ Self-reliant: Moonlight has clawed his way up from being an ophaned streetkid like hundreds of other children in Night City to being a respected fixer for the district of Kabuki. He relies on his own wit, knowledge and skills to do what needs to be done. Self-sufficiency will likely help him in the netherworld, learning what he needs to as he goes.
β’ Congenial: Night City's population is comprised of dozens of nationalities and subcultures, and all levels of social strata from the chronically homeless to the top 0.1%. A fixer's job, Moonlight's job, is to seamlessly and naturally interact with people from all walks of life in a way that makes them want to do business. In the netherworld, Moonlight will be well-equipped to handle people from different worlds with minimal offense.
β’ Networker: It is Moonlight's business to connect the person that needs something to the person who can supply it. Of course, to do that, you have to know people - a lot of people - well enough that all those people trust you enough to handle what is often very personal business. In the netherworld, Moonlight will be able to use his skills to connect with others to better his chance of survival.
Weaknesses:
β’ Intractable: Moonlight's strength in self-sufficiency also lends to one of his weaknesses. He has gotten where he is in life by his own strengths, and therefore tends to devalue the knowledge of others when it comes to his own life and decisions. While he may seek out advice on occasion and even follow it, if his mind is made up about something, or if the advice is unsolicited, Moonlight will disregard it without consideration, regardless of how well-intentioned or helpful said advice actually is. In the netherworld, this may lead to him making poor decisions based on what knowledge he has already gleaned, rather than seeking further advice.
β’ Aloof: On the surface, Moonlight is polite and even friendly. But try to get to know him, and it quickly becomes obvious that Moonlight keeps everyone at an arm's length. While he may share things about himself if pressed that most would consider a secret, he does so with a very detached air. In the netherworld, this will likely make it difficult to find someone he can trust enough to become his Soulmate.
β’ Unethical: In Night City, those who take the moral high ground are limited to obscurity and poverty β or a quick death. Moonlight will work with anyone that puts enough eddies on the table, so long as he knows he can do business without ending up with a knife in his back (whether that comes from the other's scruples, or Moonlight's ability to control them through blackmail). Anyone in the netherworld from a less cutthroat world may find this tendency reprehensible, or find it difficult to trust Moonlight.
Fears: β’ Moonlight's biggest fear is being under someone else's control or command. He spent much of his youth unwillingly part of a gang beneath a fickle and vicious leader. Escaping the gang - and his leader - cost Moonlight the fingers of his left hand, and the life of his lover. He now dislikes even owing someone a favor, and will do whatever it takes to avoid becoming indebted to someone. As a fixer, which involves the exhange of goods, services, and information, 'whatever it takes' sometimes involves manipulation or, failing that, some mental gymnastics on his own part to avoid admitting to himself that he owes someone. Moonlight works as a fixer to be a contract holder, rather than someone beholden to a contract.
Desires: β’ In life, Moonlight's biggest desire and motivation was to get off of (and stay off of) the streets. He made some headway as a fixer, though was not in a place financially that he could consider himself truly safe.
β’ Second to getting off the street, Moonlight wanted to help others growing up in the same brutal neighborhoods that he did, to save them from the same heartbreaks and trauma that he experienced. To some he has given food or money, others he has given jobs or introduced them to corporate or nomad connections. For some, it helped. Others died despite, or occasionally directly because of, Moonlight's attempt to help.
Regrets: β’ Moonlight's greatest regret is the death of not one, but two lovers, both related to the Tyger Claws gang. While he tries not to dwell on it now, he still wishes he had tried to get out earlier β or avoided the Tyger Claws entirely.
Tethers: β’ Aka: The one (still-living) man that might be considered a true friend of Moonlight. This statue is small but lifelike, featuring a bespectacled, baby-faced Japanese man dressed in black and pastel business clothes. Aka and Moonlight have known each other for their entire adult lives. What began as a tenuous business relationship grew to a deep friendship. In his darkest moments, Aka was the one Moonlight turned to for help.
β’ Moonchies: A packet of bite-sized snacks, encased in a flat, rectangular plastic foil bag printed with a starry background and the logo MOONCHIES in white text. While perhaps bizarre at first glance, this Tether is representative of Moonlight's first love, Li Xin, and the source of Moonlight's alias. What began as a romantic (if sappy) "You are my moonlight" became shortened to Moonlight as a pet name, then further shortened to an affectionate, teasing "Moonchie," based off the popular snack brand. After Li Xin's suicide, Moonlight adopted the nickname as his alias. He's never really liked Moonchies snacks, but would occasionally buy them to remember a man deeply important to him - and deeply missed.
β’ Mizutani Shion: A toy sports car, painted metallic green and emblazoned with a tiger's face and text in English and Japanese. This Tether links to the Tyger Claws gang, with whom Moonlight spent years. While much of life with the Tyger Claws was misery, it was through them Moonlight discovered his love of sports cars and illegal street racing.
